Searching

The best way to start your searches is to have as much information regarding your family as you can get. This information would include first and last names; dates of birth, marriage and death; places of birth, marriages, deaths and residences.

Then you can search for the myriad of genealogical / surname websites. Many sites are free to use. Some are free to start a search but require a one-time or monthly fees to access the data in the sites database.

You will need to decide how much you wish to spend for your searches.

You will be amazed at how much data you can encounter by checking links on websites. You will find yourself going from one website to another checking out links that each site has related to your quest.

If there is a contact link, try contacting a person or organization identified on a site. Simply state that you are doing a family genealogical search and you are inquiring what information may be available that may not be on the site.

Many persons and organizations are eager to help people with their searches. They could direct you to a site that you would never locate on your own.

For myself, I will even try spelling variations for names of people, cities, counties, or whatever data I may start with. Myself and others have found relatives not under a name we had but somewhere along the way, the person had a name change. Many persons will not only have an Anglo name but also a name from their home country or heritage. One example from my families search was a male that took his mothers maiden name. Their are some cultures that believe in this practice.

Many people that entered the US through Ellis Island or any of the other ports of entry were given a last name of the city or region they came from because the port personnel could not pronounce or spell foreign names.

In summary, keep an open mind. If you hit a brick wall, think outside the box. What other variants could apply to your search. Also, back away from your search for a while if you have been at it constantly. Many times a break from searching will clear your mind and a solution will go off like a light bulb over your head.

Last but not least, always ask others. They may not be working on the same data, but may have a new search idea that worked for them.
